3 Ways to Know It’s Your Intuition Speaking (and not just thoughts)

Harnessing intuition is powerful and transformative! This skill can be honed through being more aware of clues, cues, and signs in your environment and in your body.

When I work with clients 1:1 or in my group programs, we take time to work together on developing a deep relationship with intuition through oracle or tarot cards, journaling exercises, and asking Innate for guidance.

It is also helpful to know what is NOT your intuition so that you can focus less on your thoughts and more on universal guidance. This is best developed through state training, such as meditation and Reiki Attunements (I offer these trainings in group and 1:1 programs).

I love working with intuition so much! It is truly the foundation of energy healing, such as in Reiki, BodyTalk, or Intuitive Coaching. Below, I share my top 3 ways of discerning communication from your intuition.

1.In Body: Feeling your intuition physically in your body, specifically around your heart center.

As human beings, we have these beautiful brains — and they serve us well (until they don’t). Often, because there has been a focus put on the left brain: direct logical, intellectual development, and analytical thinking, the right brain: felt sense, instinctual, and lateral thinking is underdeveloped. This creates challenges in discerning “thinking” thoughts from intuition.

The solution — drop your awareness down into your body! Get out of your head and brain completely, and start to notice what you feel and sense.

Physically active practices, such as yoga and qigong, which link your breath with your body’s movements, are good ways to learn how to tap into your body if you’re not sure how. Gentle healing energy, such as Reiki, is a more passive way to get connected to your body and out of your head.

Once your awareness is in your body, you can begin to notice that intuition is a communication from your heart! Your heart has a lot to say and share with you — you only need to know how to listen to it!

If you are wondering if it’s your intuition speaking, check-in with yourself. Can you feel it in your head? Or, in your body, specifically, from your heart?

2. Calmness: You feel a sense of calm when you receive messages or communication from your intuition.

The limbic brain is responsible for deep emotions, such as fear and rage (anger). It triggers the fight, flight, freeze, faint, or fawn response, which are reactions to pain or punishment, perceived or real.

Basically, the brain (with the influence of the mind) is a “hotspot” for conditioned reactions that come from the unconscious mind.

That being said, when you are feeling a lot of emotions around a thought, it usually is not intuition speaking.

Intuition comes from your heart. Your heart knows and wants the best for you. When intuition speaks, there is a calming sensation that comes over you — even if only for a moment.

This calm lets you know that you are on the right path. That you are moving in the right direction. That you are beyond emotions and thoughts and being guided by your intuition.

Even if the right path, direction, or thing to do is challenging — there is still a sense of calm, because deep down, you know it is right and from your heart.

3. Spontaneous: You feel as though the message, information, or communication has dropped from the sky! It didn't come from anywhere but the Source!

Intuition is on a divine timeline, not on a mind timeline.
If you are “trying” and “efforting” to receive intuitive information it may not come because the mind is so attached to “getting it”.

It is true that with practice, or intuitive gifts, intuition can be more accessible “on demand”.

However, you know it is intuition, and not just thinking, when you spontaneously receive the message, communication, or insight.

This often happens because the mind, on zero-agenda-mode, is open and available to Source connection via the crown chakra, or the 7th main chakra.

It can literally feel like the message gets dropped, delivered, or downloaded into you by Source, the Universe, or the Heavens.
